Aidan Payne Sets School Record, Sends New Hanover Football To State Championship
Aidan Payne's top season of the newsletter is not over yet, and there is one obstacle that needs to be overcome, but Tuesday night has provided an excellent chapter so far.
In his last game at Legion Stadium, Payne broke New Hanover boys' soccer record for one season with goals and sent the Wildcats to the state tournament for the second season in a row. The leading scorer scored four goals for the Wildcats in a 4-2 victory over Cardinal Gibbons who provided the defending champions.
Payne has 52 goals this season, breaking the previous 50 record set by Brannon Blake in 2009. If Payne is old and gray, he may show up Tuesday night when he gets to the top of No. 1 New Hanover. (26-0-1) recording books.
But that meditation must wait.
"Absolutely not (thinking of the record)," Payne said. "I just think I scored a goal and we might go to the provincial finals. I don't care about that. I think this is amazing, we will go into the provincial finals."
Wonderful Aidan: Payne's two extra time goals lift New Hanover in the third round
Payne's first goal came in the 12th minute. He got a long ground with his back to the goal before outscoring a number of Cardinal Gibbons defenders, creating a small space and shooting with the left foot on a nearby goal to lead 1-0.
New Hanover's preliminary profit lasted 21 minutes. Cardinal Gibbons tied the game on a long ball that protected every Wildcat defender and ran in the direction of Declan Davis, who put down his shot and put it in the net.

No. 2 Cardinal Gibbons (17-4-2) scored that goal until he was quick in the second half, controlling the ball and creating plenty of chances for New Hanover second goalkeeper Jhonny DePaz. Then, everything changed with 25:41.
Cardinal Gibbons 'poor play gave Payne a good look at the goal for the first time since he opened the game, with the elder curling his effort to the right of the Crusaders' four-man wall. Along the way, the ball deviated a bit and found its home past the Cardinal Gibbons goalkeeper.
The story continues
"When we got that free kick I wanted to take it, I was confident I could hit it, I just hit it and watched it go back into the net," he said.
Payne's second goal sparked a new Hanover wave, with the Wildcats doubling their lead in 1:11 afterwards when teammate Charlie Letson cut Cardinal Gibbons defensively through the center, which Payne took action and gave New Hanover 3-1 best.
And with just 10 minutes left, Payne closed her night with another beauty of her left foot, this time to the far pole and the soft curl that had just been around the Crusaders nun.
"He's the provincial player of the year," said New Hanover coach TJ Rennie. "I hope that's what comes out. I have no other words for him."
Payne stole the show, but in many ways, New Hanover put an end to this Cardinal Gibbons victory.
Payne, Owen Hayworth, Christian Mullins and John Franck all had to leave the game separately due to injuries. Players such as Oliver Bain, Preston Lian, Jonathan Leon Didier and Angel Barrerra played the most minutes after the season, putting in the work required to keep the Cardinal Gibbons side on the scoring board while the Crusaders played very well in the game. .
DePaz continues to leave his mark during the Wildcats season. The second goalkeeper came in the fall as one of New Hanover's only question marks. DePaz played a heroic role in the fourth round with a 1-0 win over Apex, and made five crucial tests on Tuesday night. He stoned Cardinal Gibbons' sentence less than 10 minutes from time.
"We love Jhonny. He's a shot-stopper and that was great," Rennie said. "4-2 with 10 minutes left makes it really difficult. It was great and since I was young as a second student entering the first division, it was better than we had expected."
Cardinal Gibbons scored the second goal with five minutes left in the corner, but the Crusaders' return request stood there. The only game New Hanover did not win this season was a 2-2 draw with the Cardinal Gibbons on August 27. The Wildcats retaliated with that result on Tuesday night.
The New Hanover rescue story will not end without a national title, and the Wildcats will face Hough (22-3-1) either Friday night or Saturday in the 4A Final.
